UPDAA Community Service during the Start of the Lockdown

        Covid-19 pandemic ushered one of the most critical times in history of mankind.  This year made us rely on our values of bayanihan and paglingap.

         The UPDAA responded to the challenges of this pandemic. For a start, as part of the community service program of the Association, a free online consultation portal “UP Dentista Para sa Bayan using the Facebook Group Page as a communication platform.

        It was launched to serve the Filipino community during the Covid-19 Pandemic Lock Down.  It ran  from March 22 until May 15, 2020.  The Facebook  page and Facebook group were launched on March 22 and while the Twitter account was launched on March 28.  There were 49 Volunteer Doctors, 6 FB Page Admins and 11 Twitter Account Admins.      Almost five thousand accounts joined the  group.        

                           

            There was a handful of stranded students from the UP Manila College of Dentistry during the lock down.  Nine students were forced to to remain in their dormitories during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).  With the help of anonymous sponsors and the UPDAA, cash and groceries were picked up in the College receiving area by the beneficiaries. 

             

            There was also the solicitation of  hygiene kits from The Richmonde Hotel Ortigas through the kind assistance of Mr. Joreld Montelibano and Povidone oral rinses from Pascual Laboratories. Dental Kits and 500 Bottles of Povidone Iodine Gargle for PGH Doctors and frontliners were distributed to the Pulmonary Medicine Department and Anesthesia Department through Dr. Jubert Benedicto

          

             The following institutions were also beneficiaries of the solicited items from Pascual Laboratories.   Among the items brought in were Povidone Iodine Gargle and Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide (Oracare) rinses.

            When the UP-PGH formed the Covid -19 Operations Center, they were in need of volunteers to help in answering phone calls in the Help Hotlines and help in manning the Swabbing Team of Person under Investigation (PUI) and Person under Monitoring (PUM).  The UPDAA was able to gather at least ten volunteers.   Five UP College of Dentistry Alumni were trained to perform the Test Swabbing. The following were Dr Ricardo Boncan, Dr Krystark Gomez, Dr Eula Idlefonso, Dr Janine Thea Ellavera and Dr Eunice Bobis.
